In December of 1891, three houses on Preston Street were destroyed in a single fire. This fire prompted the call for organized fire protection. Meeting at Mergler's Store on Main and Mt. Vernon Streets, those citizens unanimously agreed to organize a fire company and on January 10, 1892, Ridgefield Park Hose Company Number One was incorporated. Members contributed funds and a 2 wheeled hose jumper and auxiliary equipment were purchased. Bonds were also sold and $1000 was raised to purchased a lot and erect a building on the site where Hose Company Number One presently stands.
