ICYMI - Lenape Lifeways Slideshow
Did you miss the Ridgefield Park Environmental Commission's Lenape Lifeways Program on Sunday, June 23? Don't worry, we have a recap of the program with photos for you to view from the day's program. A special thank you to Carla Messinger founder of the Native American Heritage Programs who led a wonderful discussion on the Lenape Native Americans. Carla's presentation included an overview of the Lenape family life, clothing, hunting, gardening and past and present contributions.
As a descendant of the Lenape (Delaware) Indians (from Pennsylvania), who were the first inhabitants of eastern Pennsylvania, western New Jersey, and part of New York, Carla presented a true picture of early American Indian life, refuting stereotypes and developing an understanding of the Lenape peaceful, nature-centered lifestyle that could be of value to our competitive, ecologically troubled modern society. The mission is “to present, preserve, and perpetuate the history, lifeways, culture, and contributions of the Lenape and other Native American groups,” and as Director of Native American Heritage Programs Carla continues that commitment today.
Carla is also the author of the award-winning children’s book When the Shadbush Blooms (Fall 2007), which she spoke about during her presentation. She also fielded questions from the 50 participants who were in attendance and encouraged them to look and touch many of the artifacts that were on display at the Civic Center that day.
