Recycling Program

RecycleRECYCLING COORDINATOR

All residents, businesses and organizations in the Village of Ridgefield Park are required to implement recycling of selected waste products to reduce disposal costs.

The recycling center is located at 24 Industrial Avenue and is open from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, Monday through Saturday. Proof of Residency is required.
NO CONTRACTORS or COMMERCIAL VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED.

Collection Regulations:

  1. All commingled recyclables will be placed together in the proper container and placed at curbside for collection.
    a) Approved containers are made of hard plastic with a maximum capacity of 20 gallons.
    b) Plastic bags or boxes cannot be used to hold commingled items.

  2. All containers and recyclables shall be placed at the curb no earlier than 5:00 PM the night before collection and empty containers removed from the curb by 8:00 PM collection day.

  3. All tires, air conditioners, textiles and white goods such as refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves and hot water heaters should be placed at the curb on your scheduled recycling day only after making arrangements with the Public Works Department at 440-4860. Failure to call will result in the item remaining at the curb.

  4. Corrugated cardboard and brown paper bags shall be flattened and tied in bundles or placed in a recycling container such as a milk crate. Keep newspapers separate from magazines and mixed paper.

  5. Yard waste, grass and leaves must be in a rigid plastic or galvanized container or in bio-degradable paper bags. No plastic bags will be accepted.

The Village reserves the right to refuse to pick up any items if the requirements of the Village are not met. The Village also reserves the right to enforce all penalties pertaining to recycling and garbage ordinances.

Glass RecyclingGLASS

What is Glass?
bullet All bottles and jars, clear, brown or green, used for packaging foods or beverages and commonly known as glass.
bullet Mirrors, light bulbs and auto glass ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

How to save: DO NOT BREAK

bullet

Remove caps, lids and wash out all residue from food containers.

bullet

Commingle with aluminum, tin and plastic in one container.

Recycle Aluminum ALUMINUM

What is Aluminum?
bullet All Aluminum beverage cans and cat food cans. Pie dishes, trays and aluminum foil are now acceptable.
How to save: DO NOT CRUSH.
bullet All cans must be rinsed.
bullet Commingle with glass, tin and plastic in one container.

Recycle Tin, Aerosol TIN AND AEROSOL CANS

What are Tin and Aerosol Cans?
bullet A steel can with a tin lining that contained food products, juices of fruit and jellies.
bullet An aerosol can is a sealed airtight container which dispenses a product in a controlled direction.
How to save: DO NOT CRUSH
bullet Wash out all food residue.
bullet Aerosol cans should be empty.
bullet Commingle with glass, plastic and aluminum in one container. DO NOT CRUSH

Recycle Plastic PLASTIC CONTAINERS

What is a Plastic Container?
bullet A plastic bottle or jug that contained milk, apple cider, soda, spring water, bleach, liquor or laundry detergents.
bullet Any plastic container with a #1 or 2 stamped on it.
How to save: DO NOT CRUSH.
bullet Rinse out container.
bullet Commingle with glass, aluminum and tin in one container.
bullet DO NOT CRUSH.

Newspaper NEWSPAPERS

What is a Newspaper?
bullet All newsprint used to convey or report news.
bullet Window envelopes, plastic coated envelopes, brown paper and tissue ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
How to save:
bullet Tie with twine or place in recycling container such as a milk crate. Place at curbside on scheduled collection day. Check your recycling calendar.

CORRUGATED CARDBOARD

What is Corrugated?
bullet Heavy cardboard made up of two outside layers of heavy paper with corrugation in between. Brown grocery bags are acceptable.
bullet No paperboard gift and food containers.
How to save:
bullet Flatten and tie in bundles no heavier than 30 pounds. Place at curb next to commingled items on collection day.

MAGAZINES AND MIXED PAPER

What are magazines and mixed paper?
bullet Any publication with a paper back that contains stories and articles.
bullet All types of paper such as catalogs, junk mail, telephone books, computer paper and high grade paper.
How to save:
bullet Tie with twine or place in recycling container on your collection day.

WHITE GOODS AND SCRAP METAL

What are white goods and scrap?
bullet Large appliances such as freezers, refrigerators, dryers, washing machines, dishwashers, stoves, hot water heaters and air conditioners.
bullet Any large item made of metal or cast iron.
How to prepare:
bullet CALL DPW at 440-4860 to give your address and place at curb Tuesday night for Wednesday collection.
bullet For safety, remove all doors and lay tall items on their sides to prevent tipping.

TIRES

What are tires?
bullet Any used tire off your car, motorcycle, small truck or trailer.
bullet NO large truck tires are accepted.
How to save:
bullet CALL DPW at 440-4860 to give your address and place at curb Tuesday night for Wednesday collection.

YARD WASTE

What is yard waste?
bullet Yard waste will consist of your grass clippings, bushes, hedges, branches or logs that come from the upkeep of your yard.
How to prepare:
bullet Place at curbside on your scheduled day.
bullet Grass must be in a rigid plastic or galvanized container or in bio-degradable paper bags.
bullet NO PLASTIC BAGS
bullet Bushes, hedges and branches must be tied in 4 foot bundles.

LEAVES

What are leaves?
bullet Those materials naturally formed from trees and bushes that are suitable for composting
How to prepare:
bullet During October, November and December, you can rake your leaves into the street in front of your house or apartment for collection on your street cleaning day.
bullet You may also place leaves at the curb in bio-degradable paper bags.
bullet No plastic bags will be accepted.

USED MOTOR OIL AND FILTERS

What is motor oil and filters?
bullet The motor oil and filter from your motor vehicle.
How to save:
bullet Bring to recycling centerat the Public Works garage 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, Monday through Friday.
bullet Do not mix with antifreeze.

ANTIFREEZE

What is Antifreeze?
bullet A substance of low freezing point added to a liquid, most commonly used in radiators of automobiles.
How to save:

CAR AND HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES

What batteries are accepted?
bullet Any battery from your car, truck, boat or motorcycle.
bullet Any household battery such as AA, AAA, C, D and 9 volt.

PROPANE TANKS

What is a propane tank?
bullet A 20lb tank holding propane to cook with on your outside barbecue. ONLY 20lb tanks are accepted.

bullet EMPTY tanks only.

TEXTILES

What are textiles?
bullet Acceptable textiles are all types of clothing and household textile articles such as pants, dresses, hats, drapes, curtains, belts, towels, sheets, shows and handbags.

bullet Bring to recycling centerat 24 Industrial Avenue  9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, Monday through Saturday or call DPW at 440-4860 for curbside collection on Wednesday.

CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION

What is C & D?
bullet Any wood, plaster, sheetrock, asphalt, shingles or concrete from any small renovation job from your residential property with NO CONTRACTOR INVOLVED.
bullet Large renovation jobs must be recycled privately.
How to save:
bullet Bring to recycling centerat 24 Industrial Avenue  9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, Monday through Saturday.
bullet No contractors or commercial vehicles are allowed. Proof of residency is required.
