The need for fire protection south of Winant Avenue (Rt. 46), was soon apparent and in August of 1911, meetings were held in the Overpeck Hotel on Bergen Turnpike which led to the formation of the Active Chemical & Hose Company. The Board of Commissioners officially accepted this company in April of 1912. The members purchased an EMF Touring Car in 1912 and rigged it with two soda/acid extinguishers. In 1914, the company modified a Winston Chassis into a first class fire apparatus also retaining the original modified touring car. This company was housed in several locations before settling into it's present quarters, located at Henry Street and Teaneck Road.
