Friends of the Library

The Ridgefield Park Library is lucky to have the support of the very wonderful Friends of the Ridgefield Park Public Library. The Friends hold their monthly meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from September through June. Throughout the year, they sponsor trips, programs, and book sales to supplement the library’s annual budget. The Friends have been a driving force in the creation of the library’s DVD collection and have contributed generously to the recent renovation of the library by purchasing much of the adult department’s furniture. The Friends are always looking for new friends and welcome them to the monthly meetings. Click here for schedule.

Cooking with Friends is a compilation of recipes contributed by the Friends of the Library and other RP cooks. The cookbook is available for purchase at the library for $8.00 a copy and all proceeds benefit the Friends of the Library and its activities.

Getting a Library Card

Village residents aged 5 years old and above will be issued library cards which can be used at any BCCLS-member library. Residents must provide proof of residency in the form of an unexpired driver’s license with a current Ridgefield Park address or a current utility bill in the name of the applicant. Parents or guardians must co-sign cards for minors and are responsible for any fines or fees resulting from the use of the minor’s card. Library cards expire every three years and residency re-check will be required to renew borrowing privileges. Lost library cards will be replaced for $3.00 each. There is no charge for the first library card.

Open Borrowing

Library cards from over 150 public libraries in Northern New Jersey (including Ridgefield Park) can be used at any participating public library. Open Borrowing is the first step toward a long-awaited statewide library card. The libraries in the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS), Morris Automated Information Network (M.A.I.N.), Libraries of Middlesex (LMxAC), Passaic County Automated Libraries (PALS), and the Sussex Warren Electronic Lending Libraries (SWELL) have all come together to allow customers from any of their libraries to walk in to any other member library and borrow materials.

Ridgefield Park residents who are interested in borrowing from M.A.I.N., LMxAC, PALS, or SWELL should stop by the RP Library and have a green Open Borrowing sticker affixed to his/her library card. The green sticker signifies entitlement to Open Borrowing privileges. This is a great asset for those Village residents who may work or study outside of Bergen County and find themselves needing materials from a library. Stop by the RP Library for your green sticker and you’re ready to go.

Open borrowing is funded by the cooperating library consortia.

Personal Computers

The Library offers personal computers for use by the public. Our personal computers offer access to the Internet as well as to Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Powerpoint. Computers can be used for 30 minute sessions and the length of the session can be extended as long as no one is waiting. We also have an Internet express station in the adult department whose use is restricted to five minute sessions for checking email, etc.

The Library is a wireless hot spot and customers are welcome to bring their lap tops with them to the Library.

The Children’s department offers similar access for children. Those under the age of 18 must have a parental permission form on file in order to be able to independently sign on for Internet access. Those in grades six and under use the computers in the children’s department and those in grades seven and above use the computers in the adult department.

There is no charge for using the Library’s personal computers, but those wishing to print materials are charged 10 cents per page for black and white printing and 35 cents a page for printing in color.

Recycling @ Your Library

The library now has postage-free mailers available so that you can recycle your used printer cartridges. Once you have finished with a cartridge, you simply place it in a plastic mailer and deposit it into a US postal service mailbox. The cartridges will be recycled, which is good for the earth, and the library will receive a donation from the recycling company. Postage-paid mailers are available at the library. If you have laser cartridges for recycling, just bring them to the library and we will mail them for you.

Need Tax Forms?

From January to May, you will find a supply of US and NJ tax forms in the library. If you don’t find what you need, please let us know and we’ll help you get the form you require online or through the reproducible form file.

You can obtain many tax forms online. You are welcome to use the public Internet access computers in the library, but will be asked to pay 10 cents per page for whatever you print. If you are printing tax forms from home, please remember that most tax forms are posted in either PDG or PS format. You will need viewers to use these. Most of the tax sites will direct you to download these readers from their appropriate sites.
